The Delicious Power of Lemons and Limes

Check out your local grocery store produce and seafood areas, and you will notice small, yellow and green citrus fruits. You may glance over them, and only buy them on occasion, but lemons and limes are fruit staples that have many health benefits, and are easy to use on a consistent basis. They are best used within two weeks, and stored in the fridge. When looking for lemons, notice its stem ends, as there should be four or five little lines shooting from the stem. The more lines that present, the greater the likelihood of containing higher mineral content. They can be used in a variety of dishes and drinks, and are very versatile fruits.

Versatility: Lemons and limes can be used in a variety of dishes, including sorbets, ice cream, drinks, salads, seafood, jams, jellies, and even non-perishables, such as cosmetics, toothpaste, soaps, skin lotions, shampoos, mouthwashes, disinfectants, cleaning products, and body oils. They are low in calories and fat, and are cholesterol free. Yet, they are very high in Vitamin C, and contain a good source of fiber, magnesium, calcium, Vitamins A, B6, C, E, K, potassium, and niacin. They have an acidic and sour taste, but when ingested, they are alkaline forming in the stomach. Just make sure to not eat its seeds.

Small Fruit, Big Health Rewards: There are many health benefits of lemons and limes including skin care, improved digestion, eye care and macular degeneration, and have shown to help people with Scurvy (lack of vitamin C), relieve constipation issues, and help with gout, urinary tract issues, common colds, and even weight loss. Now lemons and limes can help you with both of these. They are full of anti-oxidants and flavonoids, which help eliminate free radicals which have toxic effects on the body. Thirsty? Drink a glass of water squeezed with a full lemon and lime. Have a cold? Lemons and limes have anti-viral properties that fight infections. Simply squeeze a whole lemon and lime into a half liter of water, add a little honey, and drink. For constipation, add a little cinnamon.

Both lemons and limes are high in citric acid, which in turn is an excellent source for burning fat and detoxifying the body.They can even help with burping and bloating. Due to its potassium content, lemons and limes can help remove toxicities and precipitates in the kidneys, bladder, and can even contribute to helping with infections and uric acid build up. Lemons contain Limonene, which has shown to have anti-cancer effects and help increase the enzyme levels in the body to help detoxify carcinogens.
