Eat to Support Your Health – Our Journey to Healthy Living

My husband and I have gotten on this journey of eating healthy foods because the food makes us feel great about ourselves and boosts our immune system. I have come to the conclusion that you truly are what you eat. When the food is wholesome and organic, I find that my mood is lifted and am not so tired and lethargic as when I eat junk food.

We started off with juicing our own fruits and vegetables instead of buying ready made juice. But we then discovered that we were losing most of the nutrients and roughage with the juicer. Granted, it was still a healthier option than buying juice that has preservatives added to it. On one of our shopping trips to Costco, we noticed them advertising the Vita-mix blender. It was just what we had been looking for. It blends everything in and you do not have to waste a single thing. Perfect! I have enjoyed using the Vita-Mix blender ever since we bought it last Christmas. My favorite blend is of carrots, oranges (peeled), mango, a sliver of ginger for the zing, celery, a few leaves of spinach and ice to keep it cold. The Vita-mix comes with a recipe book for foods that can be blended. It includes soups, smoothies, and even baking recipes.

So, back to the healthy living journey. After we got the Vita-mix blender, we got interested in sprouting and after doing some research on it, we discovered that sprouting is beneficial to our health and it definitely is in line with the lifestyle that we are pursuing. We then started growing our own sprouts with a sprouting kit and boy, do they taste great!

Of course, we have heard a few misses here and there when we first began. The wheatgrass seeds at first did not want to sprout- but I think we had had those seeds for a long time and so we got new seeds and these ones sprouted! Also, having a sprouting kit really helped. I now put sprouts in my salad, add it to my juice when I blend and even my sandwiches taste really good with sprouts.

Watching the Food Inc Movie also motivated me a lot to be conscious of what I eat. Now I try to buy organic and all natural fresh foods as much as I can gain access to them. When I go to the grocery store, I watch the food labels and now I understand what organic, free range, dirty dozen and the clean fifteen mean.

For my husband and I, living healthy is a lifestyle choice that we have adopted because it makes us feel great and it cuts costs on healthcare. People say that eating organic is expensive, but I beg to differ. It may be expensive upfront but fewer health diseases like diabetes due to refined and processed foods later. The processed foods however, are cheaper now but expensive in the long run. The less hospital bills we have to incur the more economically sound we are.
