Bernie Bacon Sworking Out Strong

Bernie Bacon is special to the SworkFam in so many ways. If you’re a part of our Sworkit Community, you’ve seen her and Bernie’s husband, Tony Bacon, crush their workouts, share tips and workouts. You might also recognize Bernie as our Fit Future Challenge winner. Congratulations to Bernie for starting her Sworkit journey and never giving up.

What accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?

Our sons! And, that we can call them friends. We are proud that they are all not too far from home and that we all love hanging out together. They are one of the major reasons I need to be in shape. They are active and I miss out on too much either because I’m tired, I can’t keep up, or I’ve got some sort of injury.

What was your routine before exercise was a part of your day?

I had years of (since about 40), being out of shape, going gung ho! into something only to result in injury. Recovery involved no exercise, of course, which resulted in even more weight gain. And then more gung ho! Only to have another injury. Before the Fit Future Challenge, it had been the story of my life for a solid 15 years or more. When I began the challenge, I had no exercise habit for a good year or more.

What motivates you to maintain your fitness habit?

I’ve come so far! I want to keep growing my 17-week streak. I’m so motivated to look at My Sworkit activity log and fill it with orange days. I love that. Plus, I don’t have to be perfect every single day. I’ve learned that if I’m tired, stressed or bored; I can still do just 5 minutes of a workout (I mess with myself and set it for 10 telling myself I can stop at 5, and then I don’t).

What are 3-5 tips you can give others on how to lead a healthy life?

Start easy. Tell yourself you’re going to exercise for 30 seconds after going to the bathroom; even in your jammies. Do that for a solid two weeks, then up it to a minute. If you do too much too fast, you won’t secure the habit, and like me, you might injure yourself, especially if it’s been a while. And, find something like Sworkit that can start you out at a beginner level AND provides easier exercises for the ones you simply can’t do. Because at least you can do something for that exercise, even it’s modified. That brings a sense of accomplishment vs. a sense of whimping out.

What specific things do you love about Sworkit?

I love the calendar streak tracking, 30-second moves (“Oh, I can do this for 30 seconds”), and I love my Sworkit community.
